  The city's name makes referral to its status as a capital of the imperial government in Japan 8th century. Escaping from Buddhist domination the emperors decided to Kyotos Theaterestablish there until the arriving of the Edo period. The city as it stands today is a reminder of how big and powerful this emperors were. With hundred of little Shinto shrines, major Buddhist temples, Zen and traditional Japanese gardens, and an Imperial palace you need more than 4 or 5 days to really appreciate the cities gifts to the world.

Spared of massive bombing during WWII and choice for being bombed with a nuclear weapon the city has although suffered from earthquakes and has been ravaged by war during the warlord periods in Japan. But most of the 14 UNESCO world heritage sites remained untouched and ready for the visitor to enjoy its beauty. The city has as well other places of interest beyond shrines and temples.

After a day of visiting innumerable look alike buildings is recommendable to change atmosphere as not to be overloaded by old Japanese things. You can visit the manga museum, see the Nintendo headquarters, stroll in art and Japanese museum, visit the markets or try to find geishas or Maikos and finally rest in a traditional Japanese tea house.

You might also consider traveling to near by Arashiama, and spend some time in the relaxing parks. Most of the city cannot be seen or enjoyed if you are concentrated in seeing the UNESCO sites, or coming in and out of temples and shires. take your time to enjoy and grasp the energy and the beauty of the buildings, and specially the gardens.
