| Also know as Benares this holy city is
located on the west bank of the great Ganges River. Its one of the
oldest cities in
India and has been continuously populated for
thousands of years. Its also a
Its really one of the craziest cities i have ever been, and in its tiny streets you can see cows, bulls, orange dressed and undressed babas (holy persons), prosetion of mourners with a coffin in their hands and snake charmers with a cobra inside a basket. The city borders with the rivers are called gats, and people from all parts of India come to bath in the waters of mother Ganga. The Ganges river which is born in the altitude of the Himalayas is considered holy as well and represents the cycle of life, dead and rebirth. Every night there are ceremonies dedicated to the river with chanting, singing and offers on flowers for it. Some of the gats are used also for crematory purposes. The city, as many other ancient locations, has an old and a new city. In the old part most of the gats, temples and other attractions are located, while in the new city, with more space and less noise the upper classes live and the universities and study centers are located. Some of the temples though are not for tourist and sightseeing is not allowed. |
