  Country Highlights

Bolivia might have a reputation for the poorest country in South America but its people and culture and one of the richest in the whole continent. Bolivia also was the First country to attain independence in south America and most of Bolivia's population is Indigenous, descending from the native Inhabitants of the Andes region and still keeping their traditions.

  What to Do

La Paz: stroll in the city and look for the typical Bolivian empanadas, a delight to be eaten at around 10 am. Visit the Ruins of Tiahuanaco, a great experience. Visit also the most dangerous road in the world.

Salar de Uyuni: see page

Copacabana and Lake Titicaca: Lake Titicaca is the border between Bolivia and Peru and its located at a high altitude. On the Bolivian Side enjoy the Islands of the moon and The sun with Incas ruins as a reminder of the vastness of their empire.

Jungle: Bolivia also enjoys the amazonian Jungle a trip here can cost much less than other countries and still be a wonderful experience.

Lowlands: city of Sucre.

  Travel Tips

Theft is a major inconvenience in La Paz, specially around tourist areas. Although its not violent crimes like  purse snatching, bag opening and pocket slicing are not uncommon experiences between travelers and Bolivians alike. Use your backpack in the front when walking on crowded streets.

I don't recommend long trips inside Bolivia, they are uncomfortable since the roads are very bad, its better to make short daytrips to get from one destination to the other.

Don't believe anyone that tells you that cross border trips are made in the same bus. Sooner or later you will have to change to a local bus (from La Paz/Copacabana to Cuzco specially)

  What to Buy

Alpaca, Llama and Vicuna wool clothing are a great present to get back home, you can get hats, sweaters, scarf's, ponchos, shawls... many things for the winter.
Its recommendable that you get one as well for you since the altitude makes very cold nights, in Bolivia and Peru.
Visit also the Witches market in La Paz, mainly selling offerings for the Pacha Mama or mother earth, this offering consists on sweets and beans, while you can see other more disgusting as dead animals or unborn llamas.

  Food

Bolivia is a Highland country, crops in the altitude tend to be scarce and you may find many soups, stews and rice's as traditional dishes. Ingredients are basically corn and potatoes. Meats usually Llama and Alpaca
My favorite snack is the Bolivian empanadas, a sweeter version than the Argentinean or Chilean ones.
Some traditional dishes are:
Tamales
Empanadas
