Pompeii

This Ancient Roman City has always captivated the imagination of human kind, a whole city and its habitants buried under layers of volcanic ashes in a massive 2 day explosion of near by Volcano Mt. Vesuvius. Even more impressive than that is the fact that knowing that history and having dig out themselves the rests of the city, Italians build Naples just on the slopes on the Mountain.

In 79 AC and apparently without previous warnings the nearby mountain entered in activity, a massive explosion suddenly made tons of volcanic ashes, sediments and hot materials to descend into the city. Citizens caught off guard and their terrified expressions were Entrance to Pompeii
kept forever in volcanic casts. It also kept the city streets, houses interiors and even paintings in a perfect state until rediscovered in 1748 by mistake, and provided a unique inside to the life of Romans, customs and culture.

Arriving to Pompeii its relatively easy and can be made as a day trip from Rome. I took off in the early morning and arrived to Naples when the city was waking up. After changing my train (its a suburban trains that takes you to Pompeii scavy) I had a typical Naples Pizza and headed off to the buried city, the trip took a long time and I realized we were there because of the golden arches of a McDonalds nearby.
Entering to the city is just unreal, the streets were kept in a perfect state and you can still im
agine townspeople wondering around and kids playing. The same with most of the buildings and houses. Its easy also to imagine their tragic end and in like the terror it surely inspired the fire coming down from the sky and the sky turning black on ashes in the middle of that day. The casts of the people are a macabre reminder of that day and there is a famous one of a Grown up sucking his thumb. Others with a face that resembles panic. Besides that, walking in the streets is also impressive, political graffiti can still be seen protected by a glass, and many houses keep in the interior wall paintings, mosaics, and other visual images that depict their daily life's and routine. Most government buildings are impressive as well, and the coliseum (where Pink Floyd recoded a DVD) is also kept in very good condition. I stayed a whole day in Pompeii until they closed. I could have stayed more.
